I’ve always had a streak of resistance, like I wasn’t entirely sold on being human. There’s a kind of suffering that comes from not wanting to exist at all. I think I’ve known that flavor since birth. So of course my fate would involve confinement of the most extreme version. If you spend your life wanting to escape the human experience, life eventually says, Fine, try to escape this. And strangely, that realization feels good. Like starting a diet after years of denial. You haven’t lost the weight yet, but you’re finally doing something honest about it. I’m still not thrilled to be here on Earth, but at least now there’s no illusion to hide behind. No more bribing myself to stay with “special” food, “beautiful” clothes, or “rich” moments of distraction.
